Positive changes begin with knowing yourself

 Know yourself

By Mani Jack

Every time we celebrate new year, most of us if not all of us will come up with resolutions which may appear to be achievable but forgotten on the next day. Why are they forgotten or ignored?

One of the reasons is most didn’t write what they have achieved personally last year. What is missing? We might be too busy with the company’s track record but we fail to make a file regarding our own strengths and weaknesses.

If we were to design a resolution based on our own personal diary, the resolutions may be achievable because it is strongly related to our own achievement and failures.

On my part, I am a teacher, a husband, a son and a father to three wonderful kids. If I were to write my own diary, I would focus on these four big roles when I write my own resolutions.

I would do a deep self-reflection on myself last year as a teacher, husband, son and father. I would think critically on the areas that I could improve or change.

If I didn’t spend enough quality time with kids last year, this year I must spend more time with them. If the quality of my teaching was not good enough last year, this year I will focus on improving the quality of my teaching in the classroom. If I didn’t give my best as a husband last year, this year I must try my best to be a better husband. As a son, if I didn’t spend enough time with my father last year, this year I must spend more time with my father.

In conclusion, before we talk about resolutions, we must have a clear reference about our strengths and weaknesses. Otherwise, a resolution is just a flower that dies the next day as resolution is supposed to be a reminder that wakes us up every time we reflect on the past.
